Homeowners can install a permanent unit on their water lines in order to produce the clean water they need. For them, some type of portable water purification system will work out better. They also need to consider the type of filters they need since various units are designed to take care of different types of metals, minerals, viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants. In addition, for most people, cost is a factor.
Homemade water filtration device - Portable water filters are one of the least expensive options. Not only are these excellent when you go out for a walk or a jog around town, but they can also aid you if you're hiking or camping in areas where fresh water isn't a given. Microfilter bottles are both lightweight and efficient, and you can easily pay for one in what you will save by not having to buy bottled water. These filters not only clean up the water, but they can remove bad tastes and smells. Although these devices aren't designed to produce large quantitites of water quickly, they will provide you with the filtration you need when available water sources are in question.
If you're looking to save even more money, then you can check into making your own filtering unit. A simple one can be constructed from an empty 2-liter plastic bottle. Start by removing the bottom of the bottle and then standing the bottle on its lid. Next you're going to start adding layers of filtering materials. The first layer should be cotton batting which will act as a liner. On top of the batting layer in in order: activated charcoal, fine grain sand, large grain sand, pea gravel, and larger rock. Repeat the layers as needed until the bottle has been filled. Cover with a coffee filter affixed to the bottle with a large rubber band.
Punch a hole in the bottle cap by hammering a large nail through it. You will be inserting a straw into the hole (length to be decided by you depending on the container you choose) which will provide a spigot for the clean water to run out into a clean container. Screw the lid on the bottle again, and place the straw into your container. Pour water through the coffee filter on top of your homemade filtration unit. Gravity will help the water run down through the filtering medium which will remove the contaminants. You will be able to trust that the water that runs out through your straw is clean and healthy enough for you to drink.
